The applicable basic rate of interest has been -0.88% in Germany since 1 July 2016. Due to current economic developments, the basic rate of interest was adjusted at the turn of the year. The Deutsche Bundesbank is obliged to publish the current rate in the Federal Gazette. As of 1 January 2023, the basic rate of interest has now been increased to 1.62%.

The basic rate of interest is adjusted on 1 January and 1 July of each year by the percentage points by which its reference value has increased or decreased since the last change in the basic rate of interest. The reference value is the interest rate for the most recent main refinancing operation of the European Central Bank prior to the first calendar day of the half-year in question.
